Chloroplast Gene Order and the Divergence of Plants and Algae, from the Normalized Number of Induced Breakpoints
نویسندگان
چکیده
Normalizing the number of breakpoints between two genomes, previously reduced by deleting the genes specific to one or the other, gives a rapidly calculated index of gene order evolution which is not based on any assumptions about the relative importance of various possible rearrangement processes. This is used to compare chloroplast genomes with known gene orders, with a focus on recently sequenced members of the algal class Prasinophycae. Phylogenies based on pairwise comparisons highlight the paraphyly and polyphyly of this class, with Mesostigma viride branching near the time of divergence of the streptophytes and chlorophytes, possibly within the former, Nephroselmis olivacea branching near the base of the Chlorophyte lineage, and Pedinomonas minor diverging relatively recently from other Chlorophyte classes.

Loss of Chloroplast trnLUAA Intron in Two Species of Hedysarum (Fabaceae): Evolutionary Implications
Previous studies have indicated that in all land plants examined to date, the chloroplast gene trnLUAA isinterrupted by a single group I intron ranging from 250 to over 1400 bp. The parasitic Epifagus virginiana haslost, however, the entire gene. We report that the intron is missing from the chloroplast genome of twoarctic species of the legume genus Hedysarum (H. alpinum, H. ...

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is one of the important medicinal plant species. In order to produce an autotetraploid population of basil (Ocimum basilicum) by colchicine, different concentrations (0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.50 and 0.75%) and four treatment methods were examined (seed, the growing point of seedlings at the emergence of cotyledone leaves stage and emergence of true two type leaves stag...
متن کاملComparative bioinformatics analysis of a wild diploid Gossypium with two cultivated allotetraploid species
Background: Gossypium thurberi is a wild diploid species that has been used to improve cultivated allotetraploid cotton. G. thurberi belongs to D genome, which is an important wild bio-source for the cotton breeding and genetic research. To a certain degree, chloroplast DNA sequence information are a versatile tool for species identification and phylogenetic implications in plants. Different ch...
متن کاملCodon optimization and cloning of bovine prochymosin gene for proper expression in tobacco plant
Bovine chymosin enzyme is one of the most commonly used enzymes in the dairy industry. The production of this enzyme from its natural source does not meet the needs of this huge industry. The production of recombinant bovine chymosin in plants can be a good alternative to native enzyme. Insertion and expression of foreign genes in plants can occur in the nucleus and chloroplast organelles. The ...
متن کاملThe necessity of transgenic technology in sustainable production
It has been more than half a century that plant geneticists and breeders have been trying to assemble a combinationof genes in crop plants, in order to make them as suitable and productive as possible. Plant transformation technology incrop plants was first undertakenin the 1980s based on the ability of foreign gene integration into host plant genome andregeneration of transformed plant cells i...
